We’re delighted to welcome Brian Vella as Ipswich Wanderers’ new Director of Football.
Brian brings with him 25 years of experience in grassroots football, a passion for supporting players and volunteers, and a clear vision for helping Wanderers grow both on and off the pitch.
Rather than us telling you about Brian, we thought it best to hear from him directly. Here’s our chat about his journey, his role, and his hopes for the future.
Q: Brian, the role of Director of Football is still quite new in grassroots clubs. How do you see it?
Brian: The role of Director of Football is still a relatively new one within grassroots football, with responsibilities often spread across multiple individuals. Having held various off-pitch roles at different clubs over the last 25 years, I’ve developed a strong understanding of the many moving parts needed to run a football club effectively and efficiently.
Q: What made you feel this was the right role for you at this stage?
Brian: A close friend once told me to find a role that not only inspires your passion but also allows you to bring real value to a football club. For me, this position ticked both boxes. After years of volunteering in more hands-on roles, I felt the time was right for a change – one where I could contribute strategically and help shape the club’s direction from behind the scenes.
Q: You’ve mentioned a few people at the club who’ve already supported you.
Brian: Absolutely. A big thank you goes to Rick for introducing me to the club, and to all the volunteers – especially Carol – for being so welcoming and patient with my endless questions. I’m someone who likes to get things done, and it’s been energising to work alongside like-minded individuals, particularly our Chairmen, Patrick and Joe.
Q: What will your main focus be as Director of Football?
Brian: In this role, I’ll be working closely with the First Team as well as our Open Age squads to ensure we maintain a clear pathway for younger players while also supporting our staff and volunteers. Sustainability – both on the pitch and in terms of club finances – is a key priority for me. I’m committed to helping the board lay a solid foundation that supports long-term growth.
Q: How would you describe your approach?
Brian: I’m always striving to improve and work smarter, and I bring that mindset into this role. Even in a short time, I’ve already seen positive progress, and I’m excited for what lies ahead.
Q: And finally, what message would you like to share with Wanderers supporters?
Brian: This club is undoubtedly on the rise, and that’s visible to anyone looking in. There will be challenges along the way, but by working together – committee members, staff, players, sponsors, and supporters – we’ll continue pushing forward.
